January 21, 2025 -The ANEA Coalition condemns recent executive orders issued by President Donald Trump, including the withdrawal of the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the harmful declaration that only two sexes will be recognized in the United States. These actions disregard evidence-based science, undermine public health progress, and disproportionately harm marginalized communities, including people living with HIV, LGBTQ+ individuals, and communities of color.

The decision to withdraw from the WHO threatens critical global health initiatives that address HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and other pressing health challenges. The WHO is an essential partner in coordinating international responses to health emergencies, and the loss of U.S. support jeopardizes decades of progress, especially for vulnerable populations.

The executive order declaring that there are only two sexes ignores scientific research and invalidates the identities of transgender and nonbinary individuals. This policy fosters stigma, discrimination, and barriers to care, creating greater health disparities for already marginalized groups.

The ANEA Coalition also reaffirms that gender-affirming care is healthcare, and abortion is healthcare. Attempts to restrict access to these essential services compromises public health, increases inequities, and exacerbates barriers for women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people of color.

Policymaking must be informed by evidence and rooted in equity. The ANEA Coalition urges lawmakers to reject actions that undermine public health and science and instead prioritize policies that protect and uplift vulnerable communities. Further, Congress must act by reauthorizing the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) for five years. PEPFAR has been instrumental in saving lives, reducing HIV transmission rates, and supporting communities most affected by the HIV epidemic. Delays or reductions in funding could devastate global HIV/AIDS efforts.

The ANEA Coalition remains committed to advocating for policies that ensure access to healthcare, uphold human rights, and improve the quality of life for all individuals, particularly those who face systemic inequities.
